Business as usual

Walk-in week was last week, and what a fun little experiment that was!
Some days were super busy, some not so much, but everyone got to do a bunch of fun tattoos (there was even an all skulls day!) and we met some rad people.
We'll definitely be doing it again some other time during the summer, possibly on a weekend, so feel free to drop a date request in the comments. Who knows, we might pick yours?

Anyway, we're back to normal, and i am currently booking from Uncle Allan's waiting list, so if you're on it, check your email, and possibly your spam filter.
And if you're not on it, now is the time to sign up!

And while i have your attention, if you have an unfinished piece in progress by Allan, how about sending me an email and getting booked in  to finish it?
You all know who you are, and yes, that was totally aimed at you!

Wendy and Matthew still have a bunch of cool designs they'd love to do, but they're of course also available for custom tattoos, just email conspiracyinctattoo@gmail.com to book with them.

That's it for now, please enjoy my sweet collection os straight-from-instagram photos!

My First Sailor Jerry Tattoo, in Honor of His 102nd Birthday

If Sailor Jerry were alive today, he'd be a ripe 102 years old.

If you don't know who Sailor Jerry is, you likely don't know much about tattoos.

It's an oversimplification, but Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins, who died in Honolulu in 1972, is the godfather of modern American tattooing. Based in downtown Honolulu, Sailor Jerry was credited for "modernizing" American tattooing, and was a mentor to Ed Hardy, among others.

Sailor Jerry has become a brand, and the savvy folks who are behind the brand, are masters at celebrating the name of Sailor Jerry, and distributing Sailor Jerry rum. Just check out their website if you want to know more.

On Tuesday, I learned that, as they have in years past, the good folks at Sailor Jerry were celebrating the master's birthday with a free tattoo giveaway.

This multi-city event was landing in Brooklyn, which piqued my interest and, since I was not working on Wednesday, I thought I'd give it a shot.

Now, I've been to events with bargain-priced tattoos (see my Friday the 13th event reporting here), and I wasn't willing to show up at dawn, but aimed for a 12:30 arrival at The Gutter, the Bowling Alley/Bar in Williamsburg that was housing the event.

When I turned the corner, I was prepared for a horde of ink-seeking enthusiasts. There was no one in sight. In fact, the venue didn't even open until five p.m.

I decided to walk over to Manhattan Avenue and say hi to the good people at over at Three Kings Tattoo, where I ran into Alex McWatt and met Jason Monroe, one of the artists who would be doling out the Sailor Jerry ink.

After grabbing a quick bite, I headed back to the Gutter where, much to my chagrin, there was someone standing outside, waiting. I was happy to learn, however, that he was merely having a cigarette in the shade. It was 1:00, the bar didn't open until five, the event didn't start for six more hours, and I was alone. Not only was I first in line, I was the line.

Fortunately, it was a beautiful day and I was on the shady side of the street:

I was hoping to pass the time by interviewing passing tattoo aficionados, but some technical issues limited my true interactions. Nonetheless, I was joined by a woman named Gloria after about an hour, and she was kind enough to provide me with an extra beach chair.

After four p.m., the line had grown to a handful, and by five, when the Gutter opened, we had a couple dozen people waiting along North 14th Street.

Ever the skeptic, and not knowing how the event would be organized, I deputized myself with gathering a list of names, in arrival order, of the handful of us that had arrived so early. No one likes to stand in line for hours only to see late arrivals pop up out of nowhere and jump to the head of the class. Plus, it killed time and allowed me to pass out Tattoosday cards, plugging the site.

From the head of the line looking toward Berry Street and Nassau Avenue
Once the Sailor Jerry rep arrived and politely told me the list (now 29 people long) wouldn't be needed, I stopped running back and forth collecting names. Several times before the event started, people came out explaining the rules, handing out drink tokens and pins to redeem for free hot dogs.

I was the first one in, so things moved pretty quickly. Those of us in line were trying to do the math - how were three artists going to do 102 tattoos in a 7-hour span? "They're small," I was told by the woman running point from Three Kings, "and we have a good system in place." Still, that's four to five tattoos per tattooer every hour, allowing time to break-down and set-up after each piece.

So, here's how it went down:

After eating a delicious hot dog from Bark Hot Dogs, eschewing the onions to spare the tattooer, I signed a release form and headed to the dart board:

If you look closely, you can see the five options of Sailor Jerry flash that were part of the promotion. Whichever design your dart was closest to, that was the design you got. I would have been happy with anything, except perhaps the cherry, so I aimed low and hit the left side of the bottom monkey - Bingo! I wanted the shark most of all!

Alas, the burden of being first is not having the time to think about where to put the tattoo - which is ironic considering I had six hours to think about it.

Jason Monroe was waiting for me, poised to launch the event with the first tattoo of the night. "Where do you want it?" he asked. I froze and stared as I considered all the options. He broke the spell, "C'mon, arm or leg?" These events usually limit location to limbs because they are generally the fastest parts to tattoo. I blurted out "arm" and sat down. After a brief discussion we agreed to put it up flush against my bigger tattoo on my upper left arm. It seemed to fit there, although if I had to do it over again, I might move it. Then again, I might not.

Jason asked me what color I wanted and I did what I always recommend - defer to the artist. Let them use their best judgment to determine what looks best. He worked quickly and efficiently as I stared out the windows of the Gutter at some of the people still standing in line.

I did learn that Jason had just recently moved up to Three Kings from Atlanta, where he worked at Ink & Dagger Tattoo Parlour.

He finished the tattoo, by my best estimate in a hair under ten minutes. Here it is, two days later:

Afterwards, I wandered over to the bar and traded in my token for a Sailor Jerry rum and coke, and wandered about, talking to a lot of the folks I had met earlier in the day, many of whom were waiting patiently for their turn.

Matt Van Cura, from Invisible NYC was tattooing, as well, and I later learned that he was also in charge of VIPs, who had some additional options to choose from.

I chatted with the photographer, Igor, who did a brief write-up and posted over 100 photos from the event over on his website Driven By Boredom. Did I mention there was free bowling, too?

I wasn't long for this party, however, as I was tired out by my marathon goal to be number one. Why show up early? This sums it up:

Photo by Igor at Driven By Boredom
I did meet some really great people and, who knows, maybe you'll see some of their tattoos in the days to come. I did snap a cool photo on a young lady named Ashley, who shared a particularly unusual tattoo.

Thanks to the awesome folks at Sailor Jerry - do check out their website here. There's a lot of great tattoo history there, and they are involved in some pretty great ink-related events. You can sign up for e-mail alerts and check out some of their archival photos and video.

And thanks to the artists and staff at Three Kings Tattoo, as well, with a special "mahalo" to Jason Monroe, for my giving me my first Sailor Jerry tattoo.

June walk-in days!

Hey guys, we are excited to announce that we are having a summer walk-in week, our first one ever, from June 10th till June 15th, both days included!
We started out planning a walk-in day, but we decided to try a whole week to make it a bit easier for those with not-so-flexible jobs, and well, just because we can!
Why not, right?

Matthew and Wendy will prepare some flash, but they will also be able to do small custom pieces, as long as you don't mind waiting for the drawing, of course.
They'll post sketches and flash on their instagrams in the coming weeks, so you can have a sneak peek at what designs you'll have to choose from.

We'll be starting at 1 pm every day, and finish whenever we're finished.
Uncle Allan is unfortunately booked that week, but he promises he'll do the next walk-in week, whenever that'll be*!

We hope many of you will want to come by, check out the shop and get a sweet new tattoo!
Any questions? Email me at conspiracyinctattoo@gmail.com.

*And should anyone cancel during that week, he'll be ready with some rose flash, i'm sure :)

And one more time in German! (no, i totally didn't write that, i just have awesome German friends to translate for me, that's all):

Hey da draussen, wir sind total aufgeregt euch allen unsere Sommer-Walk-In-Woche zu verkünden!!!!
Unsere erste Walk-In-Woche überhaupt und diese findet vom 10.-15. Juni statt! Also 6 Tage Walk-Ins!!

Halloween, a follow up post

Oh hi there!
Sorry i haven't gotten around to posting about Halloween until now, but i haven't had much time.
The day after Halloween we had to clean the shop, and pack for Japan, and the day after that, well, we were off to Japan.
And when we got here, and got settled into our old apartment, we realized that this particular apartment doesn't have wifi, and the ancient router won't communicate with Allan's macbook cause it's "too new". Seriously, that's what the company told us... it's not their product that's too old, no, no, ours is too new, obviously!
Oh, Japan, not nearly as technologically advanced as the world wants you to be...
Anyway, today i brought the computer to work, so i could finally post some silly photos and maybe Skype with my dog later!

So, Halloween!
It didn't seem nearly as packed as last year, but we had some good people drop by and the guys did some fun tattoos, so it turned out pretty awesome anyway, and we're definitely still planning on sticking to the tradition, so a Berlin edition will happen next year for sure.
We had some people in pretty amazing costumes show up and even though not all of them ended up getting tattooed, we very much appreciated them taking the time to come have fun with us. Yeah, that goes for the people without costumes too!
Our friend Sussi who baked us an amazing Halloween cake was especially awesome, and she had at least dressed up her kid, and that totally counts!
Davee aka Giant Cockroach had a pretty bad cold, so unfortunately he had to crawl on back to his hotel early, but the rest of us hung in there and stayed until around 2 am i think.

Sorry if i'm not making much sense, but i have a cold, so my brain is at, like, 70%... max.
Anyay, super fun day and i gotta say, being dressed as animals? Best idea ever!
That bear costume is so comfortable, i totally wanted to wear it the next day too... why can't i be a bear every day?

Hmmm, that yellow looked better in the photo app... sorry about that...
 (1. Grrr, dangerous grizzly outside the shop! 2. Allan the crocodile 3. Davee the black metal roach 4. David and Henriette as Big Bad Wolf and little lamb)

(1. Spider cake 2. Tattooing in costume all day! 3. Little Nemi got a tattoo that matched her mom's 4. Our air band works even better when we're in costume!)

Allan's pumpkin carving skills has somehow improved since last year!?

Ok, that's it for now, hopefully i'll be able to do a bit of Japan blogging before we leave, cause i doubt there'll be much time for blogging once we're back in Denmark.
Yeah, in case you forgot, we're still moving to Berlin, so the last two weeks of November will be all about packing, packing and some more packing, so if you want to see us before we leave, you can find us either at the shop or at home, putting shit in boxes!

It's Halloween time y'all!

Ok, i think we're done with the big life changing announcements for the time being, but that doesn't mean we don't have news to share!
After all the fun we had at last years Halloween walk-in day, we just couldn't not do it again this year, so insanely busy or not, it's happening!
So on the 27th, just two friggin days before we have to leave for Japan, we will have our second Halloween walk-in day, and the last ever at this location!

Tattooers at the event will be Uncle Allan, Dino Baby and Davee Blows, who will all make some super scary flash for you to choose from.
There will be fixed prices but, just like last year, it'll be cheaper if you're in costume, so dress up, ok?

We'll start at 2 pm and keep going until we're too tired or have to go home and pack!
There will be refreshments and maybe some snacks too?
Ok, definitely snacks.

Hope to see y'all there!!

Faces of total awesomeness

Man, it sure is going slow with the blogging these days (my personal blog is suffering even worse than this one), but there's nothing slow about August at the shop!

We have a house full of awesome guests and guest artists, and on top of that, we had the black metal art show on Saturday, and seriously, just wow... i can't even express how awesome that was, and how grateful we are to the people (many people!) that showed up.
Thank you!
We had such a fun evening, and it was such a pleasure showing Allan's paintings, and our redecorated-for-the-occasion shop, to friends and clients and total strangers alike.

Ok, so the first half hour or so, i was taking pictures non stop with three different cameras, hell bent on documenting the occasion, but then people started to drink... and obviously i was in charge of keeping the beers coming while Allan and Lucifer mingled, so all of a sudden, the documenting kinda stopped!
So you'll just have to take my word for it; the shop and sidewalk was totally packed, and people seemed to have fun, like at a real party! Only with an all black metal soundtrack, of course. So yeah, who cares if i didn't get that many pictures.
In a way it was almost like we got to have the opening party we never got around to throwing two years ago, cause stuff kept going wrong back then. I hope it won't be our last party!

Pictures of all the paintings are gonna be up on Allan's blog real soon (i think he's in the process of editing now) and those that aren't sold yet will be for sale, so check up on that soon.
We also have a few t-shirts left from our very limited run made just for the show, and they'll be for sale too soon!
Update: t-shirts are up on the merch blog NOW!

Ok, pictures!

Pretty pretty... uhm, i mean gloooomy and scary, of course... ahem...

Allan and fellow Nørrebro tattooer Colin Dale

Sophistimacated peoples

More window decor, cause i liked that a lot

Lisa and Anika posing hard!

I think Bob enjoyed the attention

Dino-photobomb!

Yes, the little statues are for sale too, although we were too busy to price them on Saturday!

I have a feeling Allan might keep this one, though

All wearing the t-shirt of doom and awesomeness!

A little one from the instagrams

The paintings are up until the end of the week, then we'll start getting the shop back to normal, so if you want to see them live, i suggest you drop by Friday, Saturday or Sunday, but as always, call or write ahead to make sure we're here.

A huge thanks to David, Wendy, Matthew, Nick, Matt, Davee and Ross for helping us out and just being awesome, and to everyone else who dropped by, thanks for coming! You guys are the best!

Wicked witches

Boy, are we tired today, but yesterday was so much fun!
Sadly, i didn't take many (ahem, any) pictures during the day, but i do have tattoo pictures, at least.
But the shop looked pretty good too! Not Halloween good, but we had some serious candle action going on... and snacks. Lot's of snacks!
Allan kept busy all day on only breakfast and one short break between tattoos, cause he's a friggin machine, so he managed to do eight fantastic witch tattoos. It would have been seven if one of our regulars hadn't showed up sometime around 1 am when we were actually on our way home, but on walk-in day, there's always time for one more!

We got to meet some awesome folks and we even got some cool presents that i'll try to remember to photograph when we're back at the shop... pretty awesome stuff!
We wanna thank everyone who came out, to hang or get tattooed, we really appreciate it and hope you'll want to join us for the next walk-in day too!

Here are, in no particular order, yesterdays tattoos... sorry if some are bloody or blurry, but there wasn't really time to let anyone bleed off!

Oh, and by the way, the original flash paintings Allan did for the event are for sale, and i'll post pictures here on the blog next week.
They're a cute little size at a reasonable price, and a pretty great opportunity to own an original Uncle A if you ask me.
But more on that later... tattoos!

Oh, and we missed you Chriss, you better make it up here soon!
