Celebrate the Brooklyn Bridge at Brooklyn Tattoo and Urban Folk Art® Gallery!

The Brooklyn Bridge, an icon that represents our borough, was completed 130 years ago and the good folks at Brooklyn Tattoo and Urban Folk Art® Gallery are hosting their fourth annual celebration in honor of the anniversary.

Owners Willie Paredes and Adam Suerte (who recently tattooed yours truly - here) are hosting the Brooklyn Bridge tattoo special - $30 Brooklyn Bridge tattoos - today, from 12 Noon to 7PM. From the shop's event page on Facebook:
"Those interested in receiving a Brooklyn Bridge themed tattoo can show up at the shop-Brooklyn Tattoo®, 99 Smith Street, Brooklyn, and pick from several flash (pre-drawn) images that evoke the spirit that has defined New York’s iconic skyline. Tattoos will be done by several of the Brooklyn Tattoo® staff on a first come, first serve basis. Also, for those not committed enough to join ink to skin, copies of the flash design sheets will be available for purchase as well as a limited edition book Adam Suerte put together showcasing 50 Brooklyn Bridge tattoos he’s done in the past."
Here's what you can expect from past year's designs:

If you're not down for a new tattoo, you should definitely consider attending the opening of the art show, tomorrow, May 24, 2013.

Again, from the Facebook event page:
"Urban Folk Art® Gallery will be honoring the 130th anniversary of the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge with a group show of over 30 local artists of varying mediums. In their third show of this type, artists will be showing their homages to the bridge with one common element. In February 2013, curator and contributing artist Adam Suerte aquired five 5 gallon buckets of surplus paint from the NY Department of Transit that was used to do touch ups on the Brooklyn Bridge (http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/02/05/surplus-paint-from-the-brooklyn-bridge-now-could-be-yours/).
As an undying fan of the Brooklyn Bridge that is evident in his artwork, he was compelled to get some. Each artist in the group show will be using the 'Chocolate Brown Enamel' in some way within their piece. Painters, comic artists, graphic designers, photographers, screen printers, tattooers, graffiti artists, toy designers and artists of other mediums will be contributing. Suerte, as one of his pieces, has repackaged some of this paint in a limited edition quart size cans that will be for sale at the show.
If you ever wanted to own a piece of the bridge, this could be considered pretty close.
The show opens May 24th from 7-10."
Here are a few of the pieces on display:

by Dave Tree
by Steven Weinberg
by Paul St. Savage aka Angry Eel
Even if you can't make the opening, the work will be on display through the end of June, so, if you find yourself in the Cobble Hill section of Brooklyn, you should definitely stop by and check out the amazing art!

Also, if you get a tattoo, feel free to e-mail us a photo at Tattoosday@gmail.com, along with a sentence or two about why you wanted to get this Brooklyn icon inked on you, and we'll share it on the site some time in the next few weeks.

Happy Birthday, Brooklyn Bridge!

Milkshakes and rants

Phew.
After a very hectic, and very, very fun August, we're kinda back to normal here.
We miss all of our buddies, but it's also nice with a little quiet once in a while.
The quiet is not gonna last too long, though, cause London is coming up, and that convention has a way of sneaking up on us, fast!
Allan is working on designs for the convention, and maybe, if they're ready in time, we'll post a little preview. If not, you'll just have to wait and see!

I have some good news for everyone who've been asking ever since it closed; the waiting list will open soon.
Yay!
Not saying how soon, but soon-ish, so start thinking of fun ideas!
Also, since we're on the topic of the waiting list....

Sometimes i'll write someone about finally getting their tattoo appointment, and they're unable to accept due to various circumstances like loss of a job, moving house, or just being plain broke, which is understandable, of course, but also a giant waste of time for us and the other people on the list.
And then there are the people who are super stoked in their mails, but never reply, which is just weird... or my personal favorites; the people who get tired of waiting and go to another artist, but never think of letting us know.

The point is, while most people are more than happy to jump at the chance to get tattooed, and are well prepared, there are some who seem to sign up without considering that they will eventually have to get tattooed!
We do try to give everyone a few months notice, but my point (i have many points!) is: when you sign up for the waiting list, start saving up. And if something happens that makes you unable to get tattooed, like say moving house or getting pregnant, please just take yourself off the list and sign back up when you're ready again.
If you don't, you're missing the point and you're wasting our time.

Whoa, that sounded harsh! But really, i'm just looking to make our system as efficient as possible, and make sure that the people on that list who really want to get tattooed, can get tattooed with as little waiting as possible.
So if you're a person who's on the waiting list but maybe shouldn't be... please send a mail to uncleswaitinglist@gmail.com with the subject "delete me". You can always sign back up later.

Ok, rant over!
Here are some pictures from the Black Metal show.
And some other random shots too.
Most of these are taken with my analog Canon and as you can see, it was entirely too dark at the show for that kind of film, but i had to try anyway!

I already published these on my blog, but i like them a lot, so i'm putting them up here too!

Oh, and here's one from that time me and Wendy wore floral jumpsuits and traveled through a wormhole and ended up on the cover of Time Magazine, and that was coincidentally also the time we liked stupid iPhone apps a little too much!

More exciting news soon, and maybe some tattoo pictures too?
I know i've been holding back on the Uncle Allan pictures, but we're kind of enjoying keeping them secret, so we can blow people's mind at the London convention with a portfolio full of never before seen tattoos!

Faces of total awesomeness

Man, it sure is going slow with the blogging these days (my personal blog is suffering even worse than this one), but there's nothing slow about August at the shop!

We have a house full of awesome guests and guest artists, and on top of that, we had the black metal art show on Saturday, and seriously, just wow... i can't even express how awesome that was, and how grateful we are to the people (many people!) that showed up.
Thank you!
We had such a fun evening, and it was such a pleasure showing Allan's paintings, and our redecorated-for-the-occasion shop, to friends and clients and total strangers alike.

Ok, so the first half hour or so, i was taking pictures non stop with three different cameras, hell bent on documenting the occasion, but then people started to drink... and obviously i was in charge of keeping the beers coming while Allan and Lucifer mingled, so all of a sudden, the documenting kinda stopped!
So you'll just have to take my word for it; the shop and sidewalk was totally packed, and people seemed to have fun, like at a real party! Only with an all black metal soundtrack, of course. So yeah, who cares if i didn't get that many pictures.
In a way it was almost like we got to have the opening party we never got around to throwing two years ago, cause stuff kept going wrong back then. I hope it won't be our last party!

Pictures of all the paintings are gonna be up on Allan's blog real soon (i think he's in the process of editing now) and those that aren't sold yet will be for sale, so check up on that soon.
We also have a few t-shirts left from our very limited run made just for the show, and they'll be for sale too soon!
Update: t-shirts are up on the merch blog NOW!

Ok, pictures!

Pretty pretty... uhm, i mean gloooomy and scary, of course... ahem...

Dino-photobomb!

Yes, the little statues are for sale too, although we were too busy to price them on Saturday!

I have a feeling Allan might keep this one, though

All wearing the t-shirt of doom and awesomeness!

A little one from the instagrams

The paintings are up until the end of the week, then we'll start getting the shop back to normal, so if you want to see them live, i suggest you drop by Friday, Saturday or Sunday, but as always, call or write ahead to make sure we're here.

A huge thanks to David, Wendy, Matthew, Nick, Matt, Davee and Ross for helping us out and just being awesome, and to everyone else who dropped by, thanks for coming! You guys are the best!

Sort lørdagshygge i Schleppegrellsgade

Ps. Dette er ikke et tatoverings event, så der er ikke nogle chancer for at gå hjem med en lille Black Metal souvenir i denne omgang, men vi vil prøve at holde endnu en walk-in dag snart.

Dearest clients and friends and other artsy folks!

This Saturday, the 18th of August, we're having a little art show at the shop.
We figured that apart from ourselves, and a bunch of lucky Germans, not many people had a chance to see Uncle Allan's Faces of Black Metal show at the Lionheart Gallery in March, so we're showing them at the shop, for one night only.

We'll be opening at 11 pm, cause you can't have a Black Metal art show in broad daylight, and we'll close whenever we feel like it.
We'll be serving some refreshing beverages and playing some soothing Norwegian tunes.

All paintings are framed and for sale, and we've made some special limited merch for the occasion as well.
Whatever doesn't sell will be for sale online, so if you're not able to show up in person, check back here next week for prices and info.

We hope to see you!

Ps. This is not a tattoo event, so if you were hoping to walk out of here with a little Black Metal souvenir, i'm afraid i have to disappoint. But we will try to do another walk-in day soon!

"Ladies, Ladies" Art Show at Tattoo Culture in Brooklyn Tonight!

Tonight at Tattoo Culture in Williamsburg, the second annual "Ladies, Ladies" Art Show is kicking off with a big launch event.

It was at a Tattoo Culture event several years back that I first met one of the curators of this show, Magie Serpica (who shared this tattoo).

Here's a work by one of the show's 100+ artists Itoyo Kinoshita:

Whereas last year's show was a tribute to "old school" female tattooers, this year's event has more of a New York-based slant, with an emphasis on female artists in the Big Apple. That said, I recognized, among the list of contributors, at least a dozen artists whose work has been featured on Tattoosday over the years.

I encourage you to attend if you are in NYC tonight and, at the very least, visit here to get a closer look at the Ladies, Ladies extravaganza.

Sneak posting, shhhhh...

Happy Sunday y'all!
We're having an actual day off, so i shouldn't even be doing this (mmm, forbidden blogging), but i just wanted to let you know (in case you hadn't seen it already) that Allan has posted pictures from the exhibition on his blog!
Yes, so go check that out!

Also, a tattoo by Uncle Allan, just because i care

Taking a break from black metal

We've been back from Germany for a few days now, and while the exhibition looks rad and we had a wonderful trip, it's reeeeally nice that it's all over now. Like, so incredibly nice.
We're actually only home for a little while and then we're off to Japan again, but at least there's no planning involved in that... or long ass drives! Just good friends and good food and probably lots and lots of radiation... oh, wait, not a great thing...
Anyway, i hope i'll be able to post some more tattoo pictures, since they've been increasingly rare here, considering this is a tattoo blog and all. But Black Metal March being all secret and shit has not made that easy for me!
But at least i had Allan send me a few "older-but-still-pretty-new" pictures yesterday, and that definitely is better than no tattoo pictures at all, right?

Part of a still ongoing sleeve on Natalie

I've been updating the blog ever so subtly this week. The "Travel & Guests" tab is now "News & Events", for instance. This is because i needed the tab to be a bit broader to include fun shop events like Halloween, something we hope to do more of this year. There's also a calendar now that you can check to see when we're doing something fun at the shop, or elsewhere!
I've updated the faq and other stuff too, and as usual, you're welcome to let me know if there's something you think i need to add to that.

Oh, and some info about the exhibition! I know i wrote in the previous post that it's there until the 13th of May, and it technically still is, but the owners of the gallery are going on vacation from the 1st of April till the 3rd of May, and that's, well, pretty close to being the whole exhibition period! So the gallery will be closed throughout April, but if you want to go see the show (and why wouldn't you? It's both awesome and amazing!), you can send them an email (lionheart-t-g@gmx.de) to let them know when you're coming, and they'll make sure someone is there to let you in. Easy as that!
We'll be posting a few pictures from the opening soon, either here or on Allan's blog, or maybe both, and in the meantime, you can see a sneak peek over on my blog!

"Faces of Black Metal" countdown

We're almost done with framing the paintings for Uncle Allan's first solo show in Germany this weekend, and that's a good thing too, cause we're leaving tomorrow morning!
We're gonna take a family road trip down there, and visit friends in Hamburg on the way, so hopefully it'll be a fun ride.
The opening party is this Saturday, so if you're in Oberhausen, or anywhere near that, come by the gallery and see Allan's awesome paintings and say hi!
The show will run until the 13th of May, so if you can't make it this weekend, there's still plenty of opportunity to see it.

We're back!!

Hello dear blog readers!
We're back from Japan, enjoying our first day back at the shop.
Ok, so enjoying is kind of a big word, cause really, who enjoys being back from an awesome vacation? But at least we're having a nice mellow day, so it could be a lot worse.

As usual i have news, lots of news! Well, maybe not lots, but good news!
As you may already know, if you're the kind of person who likes to check our "News & Events" section from time to time, Adam Hays is coming back to work with us in just a few weeks, from the 12th till the 17th of march, and he still has a couple of spots available.
So, if you wanna get tattooed (and remember, fun stuff only, we want our guests to have a good time), just send an email with your ideas to adamguyhays@gmail.com, and he'll get back to you with a possible date.

Some of Adam's fine work:

What else?
Oh yeah, Uncle Allan's month of black metal madness is coming up, and as the work he'll be doing during that month is all for his upcoming book, there won't be much posted online. No, not even instagram. But it should be an interesting month nonetheless!
And in other related black metal news, Allan will have his first ever solo show, Faces of Black Metal, at the Lionheart Gallery in Germany. It runs from the 24th of march till the 13th of may and you can read more about it here.
We will be going there for the opening, so come by and say hi and buy some damn paintings or something!

I was sure i had other news, but i'm still completely 'lagged out (woke up at 6 again this morning...- NOT my usual style) so i don't remember.
But i'll post more when my brain gets back to normal.

Have a sweet week everyone!

Art & updates

As you may have already seen on Allans blog, three of his paintings will be in a show in San Francisco opening in just a few days.
He has been working his ass of to make the deadline, and we just got word a few days ago that his works finally arrived.
Phew.
Anyway, the show is called "Scream With Me" and the venue is the 111 Minna Gallery.
We're pretty bummed that we can't be at the opening on the 7th ourselves, but we hope that it'll be a huge success.
If any of you lovely readers are in the general area, please go check it out!

Click here to see a preview of Allans paintings!

In other news (or what passes as news on a lazy Sunday) i have been working a lot on the blog layout for the past few days, and besides just making the blog look all pretty, i've been trying to make the booking, waiting list and general info easier to find.
So to do that i've added a top menu, where you can now find info on how to book with each of the artist that works here, as well as examples of their work.
There's also an updated FAQ with links to hotels, directions to the shop, and some newer frequently asked questions, and a Travel tab with our current travel dates.

We are also on Twitter now, so click here, or click the pretty little bird in the right-hand menu, to follow us there.
Not much has happened there yet, but i promise to use it regularly to post lost of pictures and random Conspiracy goodness!
